Designing Your Calm: A Story of the Power of Grand Mothering
I just completed a private workshop where my client brought all of her concerns to our conversation.
(What we’re truly doing is leadership development even though my client might not call herself a leader (she is!).
Within a 3 hour conversation, we got through her list with time left over!
She went from overwhelmed and stressed-out to calm, clear, and centered.
She realized how she's creating upsets and stress in her body, which see now sees as wisdom, as wise guides to help her handle the situation in the moment it's happening.
Did I fix her?
There's no fixing stress symptoms.
And, she specifically said she wanted to learn a set of skills.
And, someone to listen and see what she couldn't.
We all have blindspots.
A lot of our conversation, as with many of my clients, was knowing we've been trained to look at stress symptoms as needing to be fixed- medicated, or more yoga, breath work or napping.
What about doing all those things but for the pleasure and joy of it, not 'in order to' fix or push symptoms away?
Because body phenomena (personal and organizational) wants to be tended to with genuine curiosity.
Symptoms are pointing to a value, what you value.
Thank goodness for stress symptoms!
Wouldn't you like to know how to thank and use the symptom to point you to the solution?
All symptoms are wisdom.
It's costing you and your organization in money, time, emotionally and whole health/wellbeing to let the symptoms languish.
Leaders of organizations, teams, and businesses all have personal and organizational symptoms.
And they're interconnected.
The shoulder tension and team member missing deadlines.
All have inherent wisdom and a solution inside them.
Like a seed.
The potency of stress and the resolution, the path, the way forward is within the symptom.
We finished with her feeling complete and relieved that she does have the answers.
She needed someone who would get curious with her, get her thinking bigger, yet with more nuanced detail on how to resolve her pain points.
She now has a set of skills to employ that are unique to her, and can use them at any moment she notices her wise symptoms surfacing.
We got there in less than 3 hours!
One more thing.
I always ask, why are we doing this?
I continued…
For the sake of something bigger than yourself, who would also benefit from being calm and effective?
She has grandkids, and for the sake of them, she wanted to demonstrate how you work with adversity in a powerful way.
Because of this client, I have a new vision for the power and possibility of Grand Mothering.
