Transform Your Life: Mastering Mood Design for Presence and Peace
I’m known for being practical and offering practical solutions. So when someone said that observing their body sensations (to be aware of all the ways you create tension) sounded like woo, I almost spit out my water. WTH.
But pondering this interaction and how it got to observing phenomena is esoteric, we do have a culture in love with theories, abstractions and ideas, things you can’t taste, see, touch, or smell, I can get why observing might sound hokey. However, isn’t observation a skill of being a great scientist?
I have a question…
How do you be intentional and present in a world that doesn’t support this way of being?
One practice that’s had incredible results: designing a daily (sometimes redesigning within the day) mood. It's a skill that shifts how I experience what I'm doing moment to moment.
You could be thinking that it’s in the camp of ‘positive thinking’ or what I sometimes refer to as icing over shit.
So no. Mood design is not that. It’s much more powerful, and when practiced, has immediate results.
And practice comes with…practice! Understanding from body phenomenon rather than solely the definition (or mind) of the desired state. An understanding that no one else’s mood can alter mine unless I allow them to. I’m in charge of how I show up. Who’s driving the bus (bus=you life). I’m driving my own bus!
By practicing more rigorously what present or peacefulness or curiosity feels like in my body, I recognize when I am, and when I’m not, often in subtle ways. In that space of recognition, without judgment, I can choose presence or hand the steering wheel of my life to someone else. Knowing I have agency is the work and the payoffs are many - smoother relationships, less time spent in upset, clearer thinking on important decisions.
This is the work I do in the world. As much as I love practicing acupuncture and teaching qigong(!!) - helping people heal from all types of things, these skills are teachable (no medical license required) and are akin to performing the RESULTS of acupuncture & qigong - calm, ease, flow and decreased pain from what’s going on at work, home and everywhere in between.
Culture change in your family or at work starts with you designing and using your senses. This builds your capacity as a leader, decreasing frustration and burnout. 😀
